Chemistry for a Sustainable Future: Reflections on the 9th KCS International Conference at USIU-Africa
In May 2017, the global scientific community turned its attention to Nairobi, Kenya. The School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at the United States International University–Africa (USIU-Africa) played host to the prestigious 9th Kenya Chemical Society (KCS) International Conference from May 9 to 12, 2017.
Gathering chemical scientists, innovators, educators, and industry leaders from across the globe, the conference served as a crucible for ideas aimed at solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges through the lens of chemistry. [1]
Driving Sustainable Innovation

Centered around the pivotal theme, “The Role of Chemistry in Inventing a Sustainable Future,” the four-day event highlighted how chemical sciences act as the backbone for modern technological and environmental solutions. The event attracted about 100 dedicated participants representing countries like Kenya, South Africa, India, Nigeria, Cameroon, Burundi, and the United Kingdom.
Key discussions and presentations throughout the week focused on several vital tracks:
- Green Chemistry: Shifting manufacturing and industrial processes toward safer, eco-friendly alternatives that minimize toxic waste.
- Environmental Conservation: Addressing pollution, water purification technologies, and air quality monitoring tailored for developing economies.
- Transformative Education: Modernizing how chemistry is taught in universities and schools across Africa to spark early interest in STEM fields.
- Public Health and Food Security: Leveraging chemical research to improve agricultural yields, food preservation techniques, and affordable pharmaceutical development.

Why the USIU-Africa Venue Mattered
Hosting the event at USIU-Africa’s state-of-the-art auditorium emphasized the critical partnership between international educational institutions and local scientific bodies. The venue provided a vibrant, multicultural environment that fostered seamless networking, collaborative brainstorming, and cross-border research partnerships. [1]
For the students and young researchers in attendance, the conference offered a rare, front-row seat to cutting-edge research and direct mentorship from global industry veterans.

A Lasting Legacy
The solutions mapped out during those days in May 2017 laid important groundwork for the future of chemical research in East Africa. The event proved that chemistry is not just an academic discipline confined to a laboratory—it is a vital tool for economic growth, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.
The collaborative spirit of the 9th Conference continues to inspire the Kenya Chemical Society network, paving the way for even larger global summits—such as their return to the university for the joint 12th KCS International Conference and 10th FASC Congress—proving that Kenya remains a premier hub for African scientific excellence.
